Kaleidescape Helps Home Owner Wade Through 1200 Disc Collection Read more about this project in Electronic House Magazine

It's never enough to build a sophisticated AV system. Every home system, no matter how complex, has to be easy to use.

When we started work on this 15,000 square foot renovation project, we knew the homeowner and the builder expected only the highest quality products, the best workmanship, and a very easy to use design.

This is the kind of challenge we love. Some highlights of the project...

Whole house audio and video

Because the homeowner wanted easy access to his audio and video collections, we included a Kaleidescape media server in the home's head end, with Kaleidescape clients in the home theater, family room, master bedroom and children's and guests' rooms. The server allows family members to route movies, live or stored television shows and other video content to any TV in the house, but the clients give them additional, independent access to any content stored on the server.

Family members can also play music in any of 16 audio zones, with the Kaleidescape server, CD players, radio, satellite and cable music, and multiple iPod docks as sources. An outdoor audio zone utilizes weatherproof speakers and the pool includes Olympic-specification underwater speakers. A Crestron WPR-48 waterproof controller provides outdoor access to the family's music collection. Audio is as clear below the water as above.

A dedicated home theater

The dedicated home theater includes a Runco 3-chip projector for stunning high definition images, an Anthem cinema receiver and Paradigm loudspeakers, as well as a 108" Stewart screen. It's a centerpiece for entertaining as well as family movie and video viewing.

Security

Multiple cameras help provide peace of mind, monitoring areas inside and outside the home, displaying images on touch panels and TVs throughout the home and recording to a DVR. Outdoor cameras automatically track incoming vehicles, zoom in on license plates, and report activity. The homeowner can also access the system via the Internet, viewing live or recorded images from anywhere in the world.

One nice feature: driveway sensors trigger a voice announcements for cars entering the property, and all in-wall touch panels automatically display images of each car as it comes up the driveway to the home.

Lighting

For the convenience and safety of the family, we integrated the lighting of the home and outdoor areas into the control system and alarm system using Lutron HomeWorks controls.

In addition to standard room lighting panels, family members can control the lighting of outdoor areas and common areas from controls in their bedrooms, all common areas and the family vehicles. We also tied certain lighting effects to AV controls, so, for example the lights will dim in the theater at the start of a movie and brighten when the credits start to roll.

Heating and air conditioning

Comfort is an important consideration, and we included 16 Crestron thermostats into the home heating and air conditioning system, so that family members can individually control the temperature of various areas of the house.

Home automation

The homeowner asked for an unusually strong integration of the home's audio, video, security, lighting, heating and air conditioning systems. We brought everything together with a single Crestron control system, giving family members the ability to operate each of these systems from touch panels in the kitchen, home theater and master bedroom.

In a home of this size with systems of this complexity, the crucial consideration is ease of use. The homeowner asked that audio, video, security, lighting, heating and air conditioning all be integrated yet be easy enough that every member of the family could control them.

We brought everything together with a single Crestron control system, and included master controls on Crestron touchpanels in the kitchen, master bedroom and home theater. Additional panels provide access to lighting and audio from every room, and family members can AV and security functions from hand-held remotes in those rooms with televisions.
